Are you Grateful? Are you Charistmatic, Sassy, Golden or Abundant? Prepare to be all of them...and much moremore when SF's Cafe Gratitude opens in Healdsburg in mid-September.
Are we ready for all this raw, vegan, healthful positivity? The restaurant has been a whirlwind success elsewhere in the Bay Area with its combination of rejuvenating foods, lifestyle affirmations and social conscience. Want a side of spicy olive tapenade, you'll need to order, "I am Extra Opulent". Pesto Pizza made with hemp seeds goes by the moniker "I am Sensational".
Aside from their jazzy names, all items on the menu are "live" foods -- meaning nothing is actually cooked (but can be warmed slightly). That means lots of salads, smoothies and shakes, but Gratitude also has a plan for soups (Pho Miso, carrot avocado, etc), pizza, lasagna and grain bowls. No meat, no animal proteins, no heat, no gluten, all the rage.
Prepare to feel "abundant" with you wallet, however. Appetizers run upwards of $8.50, salads $12-$15 and entrees around $15. Feel-good fare doesn't come cheap.
Cafe Gratitude, 206 Healdsburg Ave., Healdsburg. Expected to open in mid-September 2008.

Comment: I had the opportunity to try the newest location of Cafe Gratitude, Healdsburg, on Friday. The minute I walked in I felt welcomed. Neither myself or my dining companion where Vegan's so I have to admit, this was not familiar territory.
I had their special soup of the day, a creamy brocoli soup. It was extremely tasty, hearty and satisfying. My companion had the taco salad. It was really delicious and also filling. For desert the Key Lime Pie sent me orbiting into foodie heaven. It was so good, and tangy. There are communnal tables, and the waitress was very pleasant, but not in a annoying way.
Ok, I have no idea how they made all this taste so good, but "I am grateful" that they are in Healdsburg!

Comment: Yes! I am so excited to see Cafe Gratitude come to Healdsburg. I think Sonoma County is ready for another raw food restaurant. Seed in Santa Rosa is absolutely amazing, but Windsor/Healdsburg need more variety beyond the typical restaurant chains. A raw food is as healthy as it comes and I feel GRATEFUL that I'll be able to sample their nutritious food without having to pay for the gas to get to the city.

Comment: Meat still rules in H'burg! This is a silly, simple fad that won't last.

Comment: Have eaten at the Berkeley and San Rafael cafes Gratitude and had mostly positive experiences. The affirmations are not really my thing but the waitpeople are sweet about them. The Berkeley cafe waitpeople often are having a splendid time hanging out together and with friends, so service there is frequently s-l-o-w, in contrast to San Rafael, where service has always been spot on (but the cafe hasn't been as crowded). This is virtually the only place that has desserts I can eat (also don't do cane sugars or other refined sweeteners) and the desserts have been a real treat for me. Prices are high but the portions are not boutique -- bring your appetite. In comparison to Seed, the new rawfoods cafe in Santa Rosa, you get more bites for your bucks -- but I think some of the (what is the word if you don't actually cook the food?!) preparations are particularly well seasoned and creative at Seed. All this cuisine is very labor-intensive and fresh, so it's not surprising that it's costly.

Comment: Nice concept but after eating at Cafe Gratitude in San Rafael several times, everything begins to have the same flavor. Nuts, seeds, and more nuts. Also, they add an additional 5% to your total on top of your tip, because the owners are too frugal to pay for their employee's health care.

Comment: What happened to the Bite Club discussion of the BLT? It was the only place "we", aka non-press folks, could actually state an opinion on this stupid "ruckus". Get a life, Michele.

Comment: When my waitress friend told me about the one in SF, I thought she was joking. "I am sensational!"???? I just want a salad, not a ego-boost from a paid stranger. I wonder how it will do here...

Comment: ISN'T IT GREAT...TO LIVE IN AN AREA, THAT IS PROGRESSIVE? TO HAVE THIS AVAILABLE RIGHT IN OUR OWN BACK YARD.

Comment: I recently saw the one in SF reviewed on CHECK PLEASE and everyone liked it. I would be very curious to taste some of these completely raw dishes. If you haven't seen CHECK PLEASE look at the KQED listings and give it a look, it's a fun show with 3 restaurants reviewed per episode.

Comment: I have been to the one in Berekely and San Fransciso numerous times and enjoyed it very much. The tiramisu is out of this world and the rest of the food is superb.

Comment: YEAH!!! I haven't been to that place in years. Cafe Gratitude in the city had the nicest people that working there. My favorite was "nachos". I also luved the mocha's with the really good chocolate. I will definately go when they come to Healdsburg. Won't be able to go often but will defititely go as much as my budget will let me.
